PCOS (now called PMOS) symptom: Face and body

Chin, face and body hair with PCOS: why it happens and what helps

Balbas o buhok sa mukha. Coarse dark hair on the chin, upper lip, chest or belly.

Editorially reviewed on October 29, 2026. [TODO: medical reviewer] How we review

Quick answer

Coarse, dark hair on the chin, upper lip, chest or belly is called hirsutism. In PCOS (now called PMOS) it is caused by androgens turning fine, light hair into thicker, darker hair.

The combined pill is preferred for hirsutism (2023 Guideline, Rec 4.4.1). Laser or IPL works better alongside hormonal treatment, and anti-androgens can be added with effective contraception.

Bakit may balbas ako?

Hair follicles on the face and body respond to androgens. When androgen levels or activity are high, the soft, nearly invisible hair (vellus hair) in places where men usually grow hair can turn into terminal hair: thicker, darker and coarser.

This usually happens slowly, over months or years. It is one of the key signs doctors look for when they check for PCOS, together with acne and scalp thinning.

How much hair counts as hirsutism differs by ethnicity. So a self-score is a conversation starter, not a diagnosis. Even a small amount of new coarse hair can matter if it is new for you.

Filipinas describe shaving every day and feeling embarrassed in front of a partner. That distress is a valid reason to get treatment. It is common, it is hormonal, and it is treatable.

How common is it? Hirsutism is one of the key signs doctors look for. Thresholds vary by ethnicity.

Filipinas on r/beautyph report:

“it's a thick hair na like the guys, I had to shave everyday”

Laser alone often disappoints in PCOS because hormones keep making new hair; combining it with hormonal treatment works better. Read the thread

Is it PCOS or something else?

Most facial hair in young women with irregular periods is from PCOS, but doctors check for other causes:

  • Fast or severe hair growth: Hair that appears quickly and heavily, especially with a deepening voice, needs prompt review to rule out other causes.
  • Thyroid and prolactin problems: These can cause irregular cycles and are checked before diagnosing PCOS.
  • Family and ethnic patterns: Some people naturally have more hair. If your cycles are regular and hormone tests are normal, it may not be hirsutism.

A single symptom does not mean you have PCOS. Doctors diagnose it when you have two of three features (irregular ovulation, high androgens, and polycystic ovaries or a high AMH in adults), after ruling out thyroid, prolactin and other causes. The free self-check shows which features you may have.

What helps

Treatment works best when it combines something that lowers androgen effects with something that removes existing hair:

  • Combined pillModerate evidencePreferred for hirsutism in the 2023 Guideline (Rec 4.4.1). It slows new coarse hair growth over 6 months or more. Prescription only.Althea (CPA 2 mg / EE 35 mcg) 21s: ₱540 per boxYaz (drospirenone 3 mg / EE 20 mcg) 28s: ₱943 per boxLearn more
  • Laser or IPL hair removalModerate evidenceRemoves existing hair. In PCOS it works better alongside hormonal treatment, and maintenance sessions are often needed.
  • Anti-androgens such as spironolactoneLimited evidenceCan be added when the pill alone is not enough. Always used with effective contraception. Prescription only.Spironolactone 25 mg (Spiros): ₱12 per tabletLearn more
  • Shaving, threading, waxingModerate evidenceSafe ways to manage hair while treatment works. Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker.

Prices checked October 2026. Prices at Philippine drugstores and labs change often; confirm before you go.

Evidence levels follow the 2023 International Guideline. Prescription medicines need a doctor; we never sell them.

When to see a doctor

  • New coarse hair on your chin, upper lip, chest or belly.
  • Facial hair together with irregular periods or acne.
  • Hair growth that is affecting your confidence or relationships.

See a doctor soon

See a doctor soon if hair growth appears fast and severely, or comes with a deepening voice or other rapid body changes.

An OB-GYN is the usual first stop. A consult at Kindred costs ₱850 per consult, and government hospitals cost less. See what a PCOS check-up costs and which tests to ask for.

Example

“I have to shave my chin every day.”

  • Combined pill
  • Laser with hormones
  • Androgen labs

Frequently asked questions

Nakakahiya yung balbas ko. Normal ba ito sa PCOS?

Yes. Facial and body hair from high androgens is one of the most common signs of PCOS. It is treatable, and you do not have to just live with it.

Okay ba ang laser (LHR) sa face kung may PCOS?

Laser or IPL can work, but in PCOS it works better alongside hormonal treatment such as the combined pill, and maintenance sessions are often needed. Ask the clinic about your skin type.

Does shaving make it grow back thicker?

No. Shaving cuts hair at the surface. It does not change the follicle. It is a safe way to manage hair while treatment works.

How long before the pill helps with facial hair?

Hair grows in slow cycles, so it usually takes 6 months or more to see a difference. Ask your doctor when to review.

Is PMOS the same as PCOS?

Yes. PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) is the new name for PCOS, announced in The Lancet on 12 May 2026. It is the same condition with the same diagnosis and the same treatments. Both names will be used until the 2028 International Guideline update.
